George Toriello sent me this material on Paul E. Butterworth on January 11, 2020.

Paul E. Butterworth was born 1907 in New York State.  He married Catherine K. Lapinski of Havestraw, New York November 11, 1935.  The 1940 census reveals that Paul E. Butterworth and his wife Catherine were living at 592 Palisades Avenue Teaneck, New Jersey.  Paul E. Butterworth entered service May 19, 1943 on the older end of the spectrum at age 35 probably very close to turning 36.   Paul E. Butterworth was serving as a Private 315th Engineering Combat Battalion 90th Infantry Division at the age of 37 when he was Killed in Action on September 15, 1944 at the engineering phase of the invasion of Normandy.  The 315th Engineering Combat Battalion received an Army Meritorious Unit Commendation for their service done from June to August 1944 the time in which Paul E. Butterworth was serving before he was reported Killed in Action on September 15, 1944.

Catherine Butterworth, his wife, filed for a headstone application while living at 207 Ridgefield Avenue, Bogota, NJ.  I see no connection with Hackensack other than that Paul E. Butterworth’s name is on the Hackensack City Hall Plaque.  He and his wife could have been living in Hackensack between 1940 census and 1944 when he died, but I do not know at the present time.  He also could have worked for a company in Hackensack and maybe was well known and liked in Hackensack and they wanted to pay tribute to him, especially because Paul E. Butterworth joined the service at such an older age of 35.

Source of this information was researched March 14, 2020 by George Toriello is Find-A-Grave database and images memorial page for Pvt Paul E Butterworth. Find A Grave Memorial no. 56653380, citing Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial, Saint-Avold, Department de la Moselle, Lorraine, France; Maintained by War Graves (contributor 6).  Paul E. Butterworth does not have a grave marker because remains were not recovered so his name is on a memorial wall at the Cemetery in France.
